Librarians have been doing it for years with tools as basic as the card catalog. Knowledge Management, however, became a trendy buzzword in the late 1990s when computer technology made it possible to capture and transmit information with unprecedented speed. Knowledge management (KM) is organizing information through a process of evaluation, analysis, synthesis, qualification and delivery. The corporate world responded quickly to the new information technology, and implemented groupware and intranets to assist employees in knowledge management. Within the KM environment, shared information may include data, documents, reports, surveys, informal discussions, directories of who knows what (knowledge mapping), and even mission-critical Internet websites. The value of KM is realized when shared intellectual capital is tied to the business goals of the organization. In an environment where everyone creates, shares and uses knowledge, the company saves time and money. Healthcare organizations, although newcomers to knowledge management, are moving to implement systems of sharing information. The immediate value of KM applications is seen in the areas of disease management, outcomes, guidelines, claims processing, membership eligibility verification and physician credentialing, to mention a few. The impact on healthcare access, quality and cost of care has been so great that in the next five years, more than 50% of healthcare organizations have plans to implement Internet connectivity with consumers, providers, or other healthcare organizations, according to a recent IVANS survey of healthcare senior information technology executives. Organization intranets enable knowledge sharing and information distribution. Healthcare providers and insurers can utilize clinical, managerial and consumer knowledge and experience to turn data into assets. For example, information from clinical encounters and population surveys can be used to educate patients and consumers.
